Frequently asked Questions

How long will the workshop take?

At least 3.5 hours but it does vary most are finished by 4.5 hours but you are making an important piece of jewellery so I won’t be rushing you, getting it done right is more important than fast!

How far in advance can I book?

You can book years in advance, I have up to 2030 bookable, however be aware that prices are likely to go up by then as the prices of silver, gold, and platinum invariably do. When a payment comes in for silver or gold rings I will buy the materials on the day and therefore hold the price, but with rings to be cast such as platinum I can’t pay until the rings have been cast so if your workshop is booked for months later there will likely be a surcharge added at the time.

What happens when we book?

Once a booking has come through I will send out an email with exact directions and public transport/ parking etc info, this might take a few days as I tend to batch my admin one or two days a week. After that simply show up to the workshop. Everything needed is provided all I ask is that you wear closed toe shoes and tie up any long hair.

What do we need to bring on the day?

Just yourselves really! But I would ask that you wear closed toe shoes, no flowy sleeves and tie any long hair back. I will be providing all the tools needed including aprons and PPE.

How do we book our date?

Simply select the type of workshop you want, there should then be a drop down menu for which rings, metals etc. Select the correct number and follow the links to pay. Once you have done that go to https://calendly.com/egan-sarahjane and follow the directions to book the date of your choice. You can of course select the date first but it is not secured until payment has come through.

Can we put a message on the inside of our rings?

Yes absolutely no problem, I have a full set of stamps and there is no additional cost to use them!

Are there any additional costs?

Not really. There is an optional extra with gold to send the rings for hallmarking, for £50. Since you’re making them yourself this isn’t legally required but I’m happy to do it if you want. And if we are casting rings there maybe additional costs depending on rising metal prices and how long in advance you book.

When will we have our finished rings?

You can leave with the rings on the day, unless they are being cast or your would like to send them for hallmarking. For Hallmarking please allow 3 weeks, but casting which will include hallmarking 6-8 weeks. There is a good chance in both cases it will be sooner but I would rather under promise and over deliver.

We have our own gold can we use it?

Maybe, I would love to just say yes and in a lot of cases it will be yes, but without knowing the amount you have and the purity I have to say maybe. The best thing to do is to email me at sarahjane@fragmentdesigns.com ideally with the amount of gold you have and if you can see a hallmark what number is written beside it. You’re looking for 375 (9ct) 585 (14ct) or 750 (18ct) and ofcourse what rings/things you’re hoping to make.

Do we have to decide on the exact ring before the workshops date?

No not really, for silver no stress, and for a ring to be cast you can change your mind and we can invoice or refund the change in cost no bother. But for gold while you don’t need to decide on the texture, pattern etc of the ring, you will need to decide in advance the colour, purity and size, eg do you want a pair of 5mm tall rings or 3mm rings or one of each. Basically I have to buy the gold in advance and will not have additional pieces for you to choose from on the day. I am happy to have a zoom call or if you’re local a visit to discuss what rings you want, no additional cost.

Why is platinum cast instead of made totally by hand?

Platinum is what I like to call a temperamental metal, its difficult to solder and polish and if its not done quite right then its brittle. Casting is a great option as you get to make your piece in silver with a lot less pressure then working on the more expensive metal directly. Then the cast is a perfect replica even the text on the inside of bands comes out! And you get to keep the silver master too! The only downside is it will take a few weeks as I have to send it off to the casters and then the assay office so allow 6-8 weeks minimum please!

Should we cast or make entirely ourselves?

For platinum we have to cast, for 18ct rose gold botanical rings I would also strongly recommend it! For other golds it is entirely your choice. You can make your rings entirely by hand meaning your final rings are all you. BUT it can be quite a lot of pressure, if mistakes are made we don’t have back up materials to go again, if we’re making a silver master we can just start again! Some people love the pressure some don’t only you can answer that. An important consideration is how far in advance are you booking? If sending to be cast I can’t buy the metals in advance so given the current trend of precious metals prices there is a significant chance it will be more expensive then todays price, if we are making directly in the gold, I can buy the gold at todays prices and keep it until your workshop making rising prices less of an issue.

What is Hallmarking?

Hallmarking is a historic practice in the UK its pretty fascinating really, but it is also a legal requirement. Currently Silver over 7.7g and gold over 1g MUST be legally hallmarked. There is a loop hole in that if you make the rings yourself this is not required but it is available as an option no problem.

A legal hallmark in the UK is made up of at least 3 marks, there are other optional stamps that maybe applied for example commemorative marks of the year mark. All should have the fineness which is a parts per million number, 925 is sterling silver, 375 is 9ct gold, 585 is 14ct gold or 750 is 18ct. Alongside this mark will by the jewellers mark, mine is SJ in a shield and then the mark of the assay office that has tested and marked the piece, in the UK we have 4 options, Birmingham (where I am registered) Edinburgh London and Sheffield.

If an item over 1g is sold in the UK with 9k, or 14k or 18k etc instead of how is explained above then it is being sold illegally. It may still be that metal but you can’t be sure and at the very least an importer is skipping an additional cost that small jewellers like me are forced to pay, it is a legal requirement and they should be reported. However unfortunately in my experience it is very common.

Please Contact me with any questions or if you just want to discuss what we will be doing on the day. Please add the email sarahjane@fragmentdesigns.com to your address book, to avoid my response ending up in your spam filter.
